In a move that’s raising more than a few eyebrows across the globe, Saudi Arabia has announced its intention to ‘acquire’ the Ukrainian National Football Team as part of its efforts to mediate the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. This unconventional strategy comes hot on the heels of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the kingdom, as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman showcases his penchant for high-stakes diplomacy with a sports twist.
“Football has always been a unifier,” explained the Crown Prince, donning a football jersey over his traditional attire. “And what better way to bring peace than by bringing the beautiful game into the mix? Plus, it’s a great addition to our sports portfolio.”
The proposal, detailed in a glossy brochure that features mock-ups of the Ukrainian team adorned in green and gold, outlines an ambitious plan to use the team as goodwill ambassadors in peace negotiations. According to the plan, the team would not only represent Ukraine in international matches but also participate in a series of ‘Peace Games’ against Russian athletes, with all proceeds going towards war relief efforts.
Critics have lambasted the idea as overly simplistic and a blatant attempt to sportswash the kingdom’s image. However, Saudi officials insist that their intentions are pure. “We’ve seen the power of sports to bridge divides,” said a Saudi diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous. “And if we happen to win a few trophies along the way, well, that’s just a bonus.”
