The British Columbia government announced Thursday that Tesla electric vehicle chargers and battery storage systems will no longer be eligible for rebates through provincial incentive programs, according to reporting by British Columbia Premier David Eby. The decision comes directly in response to newly imposed U.S. tariffs targeting Canadian-made EV charging equipment.
Under the CleanBC program, managed by B.C. Hydro, homeowners previously received incentives to install electric chargers and battery storage devices. However, following tariffs enacted by the Trump administration specifically targeting Canadian electric vehicle products, the province swiftly excluded Tesla from eligibility.
Provincial officials clarified that this policy shift explicitly aims to safeguard Canadian manufacturers, responding to what they described as “unjustified” U.S. tariffs harming local industries.
Tesla has not yet publicly commented on the decision, however, Elon Musk has lashed out at the move on Twitter, calling it crazy.
