Update 11:40 26 March: Regional Condemnation Mounts Following Israeli Deportation Law

Egypt and Saudi Arabia have issued strong rebukes of Israel’s move to legitimize the mass deportation of Palestinians from Gaza. In separate statements, both governments condemned the establishment of a new Israeli agency tasked with coordinating what it terms “voluntary departures,” denouncing the measure as a clear violation of international law and a direct assault on Palestinian sovereignty. Saudi Arabia explicitly warned that such actions threaten to ignite wider instability in the region, while Egypt reiterated its longstanding rejection of any forced or coerced displacement of Palestinians across its borders.

The coordinated Arab criticism signals growing regional alarm at Israel’s open embrace of demographic engineering, as officials in both countries reaffirmed their opposition to policies reminiscent of the 1948 Nakba. The condemnations also highlight an emerging diplomatic front against Israeli escalation, even as Western allies largely remain silent on the policy’s legal and moral implications.

Update 20:00 24 March: The Knesset’s approval of a bill to legalize the mass deportation of Palestinians has sparked outrage from human rights groups and international bodies. The legislation, which allows for the expulsion of Palestinians—including Israeli citizens—based on loosely defined “terror support” accusations, is being condemned as a violation of international law.

Amnesty International has labeled the bill a “textbook apartheid policy”, warning that it could serve as legal cover for ethnic cleansing. The UN Human Rights Office has urged Israel to withdraw the legislation, calling it a “clear violation” of humanitarian law. Meanwhile, European nations, including Ireland, Norway, and Spain, are reportedly coordinating a joint condemnation if the bill advances further.

The Trump administration has remained silent, with the State Department privately signaling no opposition and framing the move as an “internal security matter.” This comes amid heightened Israeli military actions in Gaza and the West Bank, raising concerns that mass expulsions could soon follow.

The bill now moves to committee before a final vote. If passed, it would mark the most extreme legal escalation yet in Israel’s push to alter Palestinian demographics. The Crustian Daily will continue monitoring developments.

Original Reporting: On March 24, the Israeli government officially approved a plan to “facilitate voluntary emigration” of Palestinians from Gaza, a euphemism condemned by human rights experts as a veiled attempt at ethnic cleansing.

The proposal, revealed in a cabinet decision, includes provisions for financial incentives to Palestinian families and diplomatic efforts to secure third-party resettlement options. However, no receiving country has agreed to participate in the plan. Critics argue that the term “voluntary” is meaningless in a context where people are fleeing war, famine, and military occupation.

A senior Israeli official told Al Jazeera that the effort is “not forced,” but added, “We are simply helping those who want to leave.” The official failed to address the conditions in Gaza, where Israel’s blockade has devastated the economy, and where over 1.5 million people are now internally displaced due to ongoing airstrikes.

Legal experts and NGOs say the plan constitutes a breach of international humanitarian law, which prohibits the transfer of protected populations under occupation. “This is not migration. This is coerced displacement under the guise of choice,” said Omar Shakir of Human Rights Watch.

The plan builds on months of coordination between Israeli ministries and far-right political factions, who have increasingly called for the “depopulation” of Gaza. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich previously stated that Gaza should be “cleared” of its population to secure Israel’s future.

The Crustian Daily will continue to monitor this ongoing attempt to make permanent displacement a matter of policy, and the international response to what many are calling a war crime in motion.
